The computers in modern cars monitor a host of conditions, and any of a dozen or more abnormalities can cause the computer to cry for attention. There is a connector somewhere near the driver's seat where a diagnostic monitor computer can be plugged in; it can ask the on-board computer what the trouble is and display a result. Diagnostic computers can be had at auto parts stores for $100 or so. Best bet is to take the car to a shop, where the shop tech will do this to identify the problem, and be able to suggest a fix.
