He seems to have a clear idea of whom he is to defend, his fellow Americans, and who to defend them against. A much more clear idea than his political opponents.

He resists the base temptations of 'popularity' and gets his job done.

In war, Bush seems quite similar to Winston Churchill ... until one considers the issue of the Southern border.
