On the o2 xda what does external battery mean?

If my internal battery ran out would the xda still work on the external battery. What does external mean?

External battery is when you connect you PDA to a power line. In other case using a.c. power. When you recharge you PDA, and once the internal battery is recharged it automatically switches to the external battery which is supplied by the a.c. power.

Some phones are able to use an external power source which is connected by a cord or line.
