The answer above me is right, the fear of rejection or not being satisfied with your current life situation. I think all men experience some fear of intimacy when they are in their teens and early twenties. For me it was the lack of resources. Some of my friends were able to go to college because they were brought up with a better home life than the people in my family. Women attract to success and shun failure even if you have little or nothing to do with it. So I stopped asking them out completely and accepted my failure, which may have been a mistake because I am a hard worker and I am in good shape. I don't mind using myself as an example for your topic, I am afraid of women that are looking for commitment and the last few years have been very unstable with regard to my job, I can handle being labeled a loser as long as nobody else gets hurt, safe mode.....

The past.
In the beginning every baby wants to be taken and cuddled by its dear ones.....but as life passes on it is probably the wounds created by intimate people or the blows given when a steptowards intimacy is taken that creates a fear........ a fear of being wounded
