Oh and by the way, I just caught a 14 year old girl stealing an earring and guess where she put the earring? IN HER MOUTH!
My owner said shoplifters are getting weirder these days and people wonder why we watch them?

Seriously, if we don't watch customers, then it's us or the owner that are losing money and if the owner's not making money, the more risk of us losing our jobs. So we watch people because we want to catch the shoplifters like the girl above. We don't trust customers at all because it's usually the innocent ones that are the worst. We don't trust customers because they're strangers, just as much as you don't trust strangers.
And people like the girl shoplifter makes us realize more that we need to watch customers. They give other customers a bad name. Adults steal as much as the young ones too.

So my question is, why do they need to steal???

Some steal because they dont have the money for things, others steal for the adrenaline rush they get while doing it. And some have psychological problems...theres one specific one where people steal even things they dont need but I cant remember the name of it right now. I think it starts with a C.

Probably either because they are kleptomaniacs and can't help it (not an excuse though) or simply because they need the product(s) for themselves or to sell to someone else. My childhood best friend stole all of the time and she was a spoiled brat! I think she did it to feel power of some kind. Her mother was very strict and controlled her every move so when she stole it made her feel like she was being independent. Americans today in general, especially children, are used to getting whatever they want and also used to never having consequences for their actions. Put those two together and you have a new breed of super-thieves. It's not bank robbing but $10 earrings a few times a day every week adds up I guess.

Yeah they are getting crazy. Many of them walk out of the store with big things like lamps and furnishings because they say that the store won't think that anybody would dare trying to 'sneak' something big out of the store.
They have a lot of tricks.
One girl I know stole a pregnancy test kit and called the 800
number for the phone in rebate.
It is crazy because often when they get caught they end up having to pay a $250. fine for something that didn't even cost
$25.00

Some people have a weird compulsion to steal. They steal things they don't even need! And some people steal because they can't afford to buy it.

Most of the time, it's one of two things:
They can't afford it, which may seem a bit obvious...
Or they're trying to be rebellious, striking a blow at "The Man" by breaking his laws.
