Writing. A chinese philosopher once said the pen has a better memory than the brain. Writing allowed the acummulation of knowledge. Imagine if every detail of every invention important for mankind would have to be memorized. It would be impossible. If you see the civilizations that had no writing they never amounted to much.
The second most influential invention I would say it was the steam engine. It allowed for the industrial revolution. Before the engine, most machines had to be run with animal or human power.

In my opinion it's the telephone. It spans the entire world. If you make one three-way call you could literally wind up with at least one person from every continent on the phone at the same time. You can fax pictures and information anywhere they can be received. Phones can be programmed to make calls when your are not even using them and to deliver messages and information. You can make telephone calls with your computer. Phones no longer need a "phone line" to work, i.e. cellular phones. All this since the very late 1800's, (Alexander Graham Bell). What next? Phone calls through the television?

i would have to say anything electronic. the reason why is because w/o 2 days technology we would not have the resources we have. we have tv's, cars, telephones, ipods, computers and etc.
