I was running around killing anything that moved in gnomeregan and every once in a while when i looted i came across grime-encrusted items. My question is: Is there a way you can clean these items off to find out what they are?

In the "Clean Room" there are several cleaning machines which you can use to clean the grime-encrusted objects. These objects tend to be junk like stones/ore or lower qualityl gems. Some items like decent rings can pop up.

The clean room is the large open space room without enemies to fight. There is also a mailbox in there.

In the "Clean Room" of Gnomeregan (next to the Dormitory), you will find a bunch of Hold-Out gnomes. There's a few machines in there. Make sure you have 3s per grime-encrusted object. Go to a machine, and right click on it. Once you've completed the 'quest' (so to speak), and it's done with all it's whirring noises and whatnot, check your inventory for a package with a red bow on it, and open it. Ta-da!
