I am having trouble with all my music and videos turning into exe files. I had them backed up but when I put the drive in, the copies also turned into exe files. I have already tried system restore which did nothing to help.

I thank everyone for their resposes.

Before you TOTALLY panic, see if the files SPECIFICALLY read "filename.exe", or just "filename" with no extension. If there's no extension, there's a chance that your computer just forgot how to render its icons properly, and is defaulting to whatever it can bring up.

If that's the case, try downloading the TweakUI utility from Microsoft for your version of Windows. For XP, that's here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
For other versions of Windows, a little web search will find the version appropriate for you.

Once it's installed, go to your control panel (switch to Classic View if necessary) and select TweakUI. Under the Repair tab, select "Rebuild icons". If things don't fix themselves within a 10-15 seconds, try restarting your computer instead.

If even that doesn't work, THEN panic (as described by other answerers).

It's a trojan program that was in one of the files you downloaded. Use an updated virus checker or panda's online virus checker to get rid of it.

extremely figuring out the .lnk archives and renaming them with .exe extension could clean up the subject; yet could no longer in all threat asess the wear and tear accomplished with the help of the exefix.exe record. could be with the help of commencing the exefix.exe by using a notepad and working with it is going to help us comprehend what precisely it has tried to do and then we are able to think of of a answer.
