I had a hard time with them when I first tried too, don't feel bad :) I think most women do.
Anyhow, my advice would be to try either Tampax Pearl or Playtex Gentle Glide. Whatever you do, please please please don't use the kind with the cardboard applicators! Plastic is much better, especially if you're a beginner. Also, maybe it would help if you tried a smaller tampon to start out with...Tampax Pearl comes in a "Junior" size. That's what I first started out with and eventually worked up to the Regulars when I was more comfortable. It might take you a couple try's before you get it, but once you do its very easy and so much more convenient, trust me :) Just remember to relax, and also, if you don't insert the applicator in far enough, it can be very uncomfortable, so make sure to put it in as far as you can. Don't worry so much, you'll get it eventually, just keep practicing if you need to :) Good luck girlie!

Answerer number one (Mulan...): Reported.
I don't know what brand you used, but don't use the most absorbent one you can find if you're new to this; they're thick. On a real heavy day, don't swim.
Try Playtex regular. Slide the applicator in until you feel it stop, then push the tampon in with the "pusher" part of the applicator. Relax because being tense will keep it out. Check out the instructions if you haven't. Go ahead and waste a few if need be until you get the hang of it. Make sure you aren't so light flowing that you don't need one: they won't go in very easily if that's the case.

I went threw the exact same thing. Tampons were awkward and weird to wear. Sooo I wore pads for the first 2 years... Then I tried tampons again, and I sucked it up and really tired to make it work, and it did! I was so happy and they are a million times better... You shouldn't be able to feel anything, and always make sure to change them every 6-8 hours.
good luck hun

has anyone tried the instead cup? I cant wear tampons, they were uncomfortable and sometimes they even hurt. I heard a friend talking about the instead cup and was curious. I went to Walmart and they were right by the pads. I followed the directions and didnt even know it was there. Even better, you dont have to change it for 8 hours! I am in love and will never go back to pads again.

Try Tampax Pearl. They are pretty comfortable to insert. Make sure that you insert it all the way. It will be very uncomfortable if it is sticking out even a little bit. And make sure that you buy the proper size. Don't go for a super if you have a light flow or the other way around. Good luck!

If you're going swimming, either wear a tampon or stay out of the water. You could get a blood clot if you don't. I understand you being nervous about a tampon, but millions of women use them. Just be sure and change them often. Have fun on your trip.

The most common mistake is not putting it far enough in. It needs to go ALL the way in till it touches your cervix, then give just a gentle tug on the string to get it a little bit away from the cervix. Tampons are 100 times better once you get used to them.

I could only use the ultra light tiny diameter ones, too, when I started. The plastic applicators are easier. It takes time. You'll be too distracted swimming around with your friends, you'll soon forget it's there. Make sure you read the pamplet inside & change them regularly. :)

They come in different sizes and brands. Maybe buy a couple of different kinds and try ones that feel more comfortable. Maybe the lite ones would be good to start out.

You have to figure out what it is that bothers you. They're actually a little hard to feel once they're in. So, was it in correctly?
You might also want to experiment with different brands. I like OB, but you might prefer something with a regular applicator.
It's also easiest to try them on your heaviest day: they insert easier, and they're so convenient and it's not messy at all, so you might like them best then.
