It gives you a sequence of beeps to tell you the status of your computer. If you have connected your computer up properly, it will work perfectly fine without the case speaker. If there is something wrong with how you connected your computer, it will give you a series of beeps so that you can figure out what is wrong.

when the computer boots up you hear a beep noise, now that is used to signal that all the hardware is functioning, example if it beeps 3 long beeps means the RAM is faulty, There are other beep patterns for the CPU, graphics, Hard disk and even the fan on the CPU.

it is what provides the "system beep". When you boot your computer, it is the speaker that makes the beep noise during the POST. It is mostly used for troubleshooting as the motherboard can throw "beep codes" when there is some defect in the memory, cpu, or motherboard.

It will beep if there is a problem with your MB, like a card is not plugged in all the way etc. It works BEFORE any operating system is loaded.
I have ran many MB's with it unplugged.
