What I want to do is buy an oversize sweatshirt from the guys' section at Walmart, take it to a crafty friend, and have her transform it into a dress. I've seen plenty of "hoodie dresses" online, but they appear to have been made with sweatshirt fabric, not actaully deconstructed. So I'm not sure if it's as good idea as I think it is. I looked online to see if any other people had actually done it before and I couldn't find any pictures representing my idea.

Thanks. I want to buy a large sweatshirt for length; I'm actually 5'3 and wear a small. The hoodie I want to remodel is a pullover.

if your going to do that get the smallest sweater you can find so it looks at least feminine. get a thick bel and tie it around the middle. there you go instant dress. but i you go to a local mall i know you can find one for less then $30. try wet seal or forever 21

There's a few ways to do this, I am in fact researching this too. You can go the oversized route but it will likely mean sewing, If you go the oversized route you'll need help from someone with sewing skills and knowledge. A way to get a feel for the right size is to use a dress with the fit you want as a template and draw an outline at least an inch outside of it as it lays over the hoodie you wish to convert (this leaves room for seams). Roughly following this method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-Vdge1TSm8 . This video doesn't cover what to do with the hood BUT my thoughts are if you cut the hood off make sure to leave extra long tails in the front then you can re attach it with buttons (like how a garter attaches to nylons). Or you can go with a no sew route by cutting holes in the back and threading a ribbon through like a corset (you may have issues with this later on if you don't add grommets) this idea spawned from this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5FJKSbdVuY&list=PLD5148705331B1CBE&index=27 . Have her try to take excess fabric (from the large/ xlarge hoodie) from the sides. Like under the arms & along the ribcage on both sides. Use this excess fabric to give the dress some length. You could layer the bottom like a skirt.

Your dress is going to look choppy so use that to your advantage, maybe add in patches of different fabrics. you could buy some cheapy plaid boxers or something & cut those up & have your friend use pieces of those throughout the dress. Work with the fact that it's going to be choppy.

If you wanted a seamless dress then you'd have to make it out of fabric rather than the actualy hoodie. Try to make the best of what you've got. Good luck.

Yeah, you can! Iv done it! I bought one, but made sure it was long, about to da knees...
then cut of sleeves, and hem them.
then, turn it inside out, and slim down the sides, like use a sewing machine and make a more feminine shape to the dress.
not so loose, and sqarish. more hourglass shaped.
i hope that helped!

good luck!
