i'm going on a long cross country trip, and want to check every thing out( front and back) very well on my 1975 unit before the trip, problem is i don't have a sevice book on my car, if it was a chevy or other i would not worry so much about it being exact, but i realise a mercedes may be different, and in lower mexico the mercedes are not old ones like mine so it needs to be correct before i leave, on a 4200mile round trip i need good info, and i thank you for you help on this.

With the wheel off the ground, tighten the wheel bearing to 30 lbsft with a precision torque wrench. Back off the wheel bearing lock nut until there is no tension and no slack in the wheel bearing. Then tighten the lock nut to the first cotter pin slot where you can insert a cotter pin. Fold the ends of the cotter pin over the lock nut, clip off the excess, replace the grease cap, and spin the wheel with your hand to check for bearing tightness and bearing slop. There should be no bearing noises during the free wheel spin.
