stars in or next to the letter "P" in playboy?

does anyone know what the stars that are located in or next to the letter "P" in Playboy mean in the 1970's issues? I have a huge collection and I have just noticed this. I was wondering if it is an indicator of something?

I always heard it was the number of times Hugh had screwed the centerfold girl, but no way to verify that.
