He was number 8 because he grew up in Italy where his favorite player was Mike D'Antoni who wore that number and is now the Suns' head coach. He switched to 24 because it was his high school number and to make it so that people would have to buy his new jerseys with the new number.

The number 24 represents his favorite number, and highschool jersey number. He wanted his number to be 24 for his nba debut all along but couldnt because it was already taken
so he had come up with the number 8 because of his camp room number 341 3+4+1 = 8.
After the long departure and then his ending of the 6 year contract, he was able to change his number to his wish.
He chose 24 because of course he wanted it all along.

I think it is because his jersey was the highest selling, and now that everyone had a number 8, the league probably asked him to change so they could make some many off the new jersey number.

Well, some of you were close, but no cigar.
Kobe changed it to 24 from 8 because his old shoe company, Adidas dropped him after the rape trial, then attempted to re-advertise one of his shoes that had the number 8 on the back of it. He has been with Nike so he really didnt care about that, but along with one of the other posters he wanted to start a new page in his life.

24hrs in a day ...and every day is a new chance to grow as a person.
