Fear is an emotion set off by a perceived danger. Fear is one of the most primitive of emotions and has helped us survive all these generations. Fear can be protective but fear can be inhibiting and crippling too. Most of the fears are irrational and ungrounded but there are valid fears too. Irrational fears are called Phobias.
Fear to one's body from external factors such as animals, fire, weapons and similar dangers is good, since it helps you take evasive action or suitable precautions. But many other fears are self-created. Fear of loss, fear of old age, fear of death (which is inevitable), fear of failure,...
One can overcome fear through several means.

Fear is a form of excitement, a negative feeling. It's a natural reaction to a perceived threat. It has a valued purpose in that it helps us in surviving, and evading danger. Fear can come about through various ways; a sense of insecurity, anxiousness, or extreme aversion to something as in the case of phobias.
"There is nothing to fear, but fear itself"
