My Compaq Presario laptop continues to turn off by itself. I have sent it in 3 times to be repaired and they can't fix the problem.
At first I thought it was just overheating but, now I'm not sure.
It powers on when I remove the battery but, it does not power on when the battery is in place. The a/c adapter works fine. Do I
need a new battery, motherboard, laptop fan? I'm completely at a loss.

If it runs on AC and fine without the battery but doesn't when the battery is in place then the problem is in the battery. It sounds like there is some time of reverse polarization problem or short in the battery. I would replace the battery.

It may be something with the Battery. If, I remember correct Compaq had a recall on some laptop batteries as they blow up and burn things. I not sure it was Compaq, but, either way, if, it work without the Battery and not work when the Battery installed, I will say it the Battery.

Since you state that it powers on WITHOUT the battery in, 3 things come to mind......

1: The battery is bad, causing the computer to shutdown
2: Same as above but causes the charging circuit to overheat and shutdown
3: Something in the charging circuit is bad or goes bad after sometime *IF* the battery is installed.

Perhaps your Power settings have been changed or were always like that(I do not know which one). But you will have to change them:
In Windows XP:
Start>Control Panel>Power options(in classic mode) then change settings as needed.

Also, your battery may be old and cannot hold a charge anymore, in this case, you need a new battery.

Sound like you need a new battery.

Have you try calling Geek Squad, Inc.? They have locations in your neighborhood. Check the online yellow pages for a shop near you. They are a national computer fix-it company. They will come to your home to fix it.

Their West Covina, CA shop is 626-919-3249.

Good luck!
