There is a window of opportunity to keep someone from dying of rabies. When there is an animal bite the animal is checked right away, because the person has to start the shots if the animal is rabid. There was one girl who actually got rabies and they found out too late, but she had an experimental treatment that worked! So, yes, people die more often than not if they miss that window of opportunity.

The cdc reports that one patient died in 2004 from bat exposure. There were eight cases in 2004, two were from dog bites but the rabies was acquired overseas. Two more were from bat exposure. Even more interesting is that four cases were in transplant recipients who all received organs from a donor with rabies!

In 2005 there was one case of rabies from bat exposure but no fatalities. In 2006 there was one case, also from a bat exposure.
