sounds like you didn't pull the advance jumper off the distributor. On the harness that leads to the T.F.I. unit on the side of the distributor is a small gray connector hanging out. Pull the end cap off and the computer can not send the advance signal to the module. Set your timing then plug the jumper back in.

I had the same problem with an 89 , I tried turning the distributor ( shaft, ) , it helped a little , I finally got frustrated, and replaced the ignition module ,e coil , distributor cap, rotor ,and the distributor shaft , there is also a pick-up sensor under the bottom cup of the distributor ( the bowl that contains the rotor etc) it could be going bad I would have a diagnostic done to be sure or just replace the entire ,distributor...from the shaft all the way to the plugs, the diagnostic plus part will be a little cheaper..

You could have a bad vacuum going to distributor or timing chain has stretched.
Make sure you are plugging the vacuum line prior to setting and some cars there is a connector that needs unplugged.
In a pinch (dangerous) have a buddy put the car in drive and foot on brake and some gas (to load up the engine), advance until you hear spark knock consistently, back it off until it is a just an occasional ping.

The guy who said the Timing Chain may be stretched is going in the right direction with this. The guy who said to set it at "Top-Dead Center" then turn the rotor is way off, you can't just turn the rotor it doesn't work that way...if you have been working on cars since you were a kid you must still be a kid!

ok this is my gfriends page so your hearin it from a guy. first get one of your buddies to help u out. take off the first spark plug (#1 in the rotation it will tell u in a car manual) plug the hole with your finger. tell your friend to turn the engine over but dont start the car. it may take a few times. wait for your finger to blow out of the hole. it dosent hurt. as soon as it blows out of the hole by air presser its on top dead center. take off the distributer cap and turn the rotor to #1. if its not marked just follow the spark plug wire from the first spark plug.
