The Tom Hanks character- was DEVOTED to his job. It was a point of pride to him- that the packages HE took care of, got delivered. Once he got stranded on that Island, he needed something to live for... So one package kept him "company" (Wilson), & the unopened one kept him bound & determined to live to see the day when he would get OFF that Island- & see it delivered. It seems alittle silly... -But under HIS circumstances, you hang on to whatever you can to keep going...

It saved his life because it gave him hope - it gave him a goal, something to live for, a connection to the rest of the world.
He had to get off that island so he could deliver that package - after all, his entire life prior to that had been about getting Fed Ex packages delivered on time.
And notice the drawing on the package - wings. After all, hope is the thing with feathers. And wings have feathers.

if he made a point of surviving so he could deliver the package, it would give him some focus and determination that someone in his situation might not otherwise have. Mental attitude can mean the difference between life and death in a situation like that. (well, within reason you know?)
