Many people, myself included, have difficulty falling asleep at night. I'm of the mind that sleeping pills prescribed or not aren't for me.
Instead, because I get very little sunshine being disabled and house-bound, I do take one (1) three MG Melatonin about half to an hour before I want to go to sleep. Shortly I'm yawning and can't stay awake. I bearly get through saying m'prayers. I find prayer more helpful than counting sheep.
Melatonin is not habit forming, it's bought without a prescription and is very inexpensive.
If you don't get enough sunshine for whatever reason, this may work for you, too.

Tell yourself that it is possible to relax and not rely on sleeping pills.
I have insomnia as well. Sometimes, it is the anxiety that I will not be able to get to sleep that is really impacting my ability to fall asleep.
You can relax by not taking on any mentally stimulating work before sleeping eg. being on the PC, watching the TV, etc.

Do you find that your brain doesn't shut off at night? When your head hits the pillow your brain is suppose to quit working. It your find that your thinking too much, find someone who can teach you mantra meditation. In a few days your can throw away the pills.

truth is you just stop. it's tough cause you won't sleep worth a crap, but the good side is that even though your sleep schedule will be screwed up you will sleep when your tired enough.

I don't know about them. Maybe try reading a boring book before bed then if you wake up, read it again or fall asleep to a one of those soothing water or something tapes. Good luck!

You just need to stop taking them. There is no other way than to stop taking them and then only use them when you really need them.
