On what page is the word obscure written in "the pearl" by john steinbeck?

A Google Book Search of this book says that the word does not appear at all, much less Chapter 3.

I just got out my copy and read over chapter 3 very carefully; sorry, but "obscure" doesn't seem to be in it. Perhaps it's in a different chapter?
