She has 3rd degree burns on her arms & back. A house fire on 12/26/06 caused the grandfather to pass away on 1/26/07. My 9 yrs old has erratic mood swings. One minute she wants hugs and the next she wants to be left alone and says I hate you!! How can I help her cope with her physical, emotional and psychological injuries?

It would seem to me that you are already receiving the help you need for your daughter. I am saddened to hear such a traumatic thing happen to a child and my prayers are for her. It is going to take some time and I'm sure you aren't able to hug her completely yet. Some things we have to live with all our lives and that she will have to deal with on her own terms. At that age her terms will definitely be influenced by the patience and love you give her. Also remember, do not let her push you away. Don't let her get away with hateful behavior as a reward for what she went through. A stern parent, a strong force to lean on and depend on after that is not a bad thing also. The test is harder for her but you by being what you are, a parent, have not lost your way, will show her and guide her through the example. Self pity is not the way. Be that rock in her life and she will come around.

Very sorry to hear this! The best thing for this little lady to do, when she can, is get back out into life and help others. It always makes people feel better, and valued, also. Maybe way too early or young to visit nursing homes, but maybe children's hospitals or something... and do a little garden volunteer work if that's around you. And she probably needs a support person or group, people who have already been through and are dealing with the scars, both literally and physically. And try not to be too disappointed that you, Mommy, cannot be the person who understnads best. She is only 9, but she already realizes that Mom does not know everything she knows... She needs to see firsthand that this can be overcome. The sooner the better. As if you didn't have enough on your plate already, here are some time-consuming buthopefully soul-saving suggestions! Just do the best you can, and be happy for your ability to love no matter what! Bless you all.

You're on the right track with the counseling, as burn injury can be rather traumatic for anyone especially a child. I would contact my local burn hospital about Burn Camp, or check out http://www.parklandburncamp.org/ Parkland is the leader in Burns, the camp they put on is used to help children that are burn survivors. They show the kids that they still have alot of life left in them and that people really do care. Unfortunately many burn survivors become very selfconcious as there are many people in the world that are quick to judge about burn scars or any abnormality for that fact. Then a snowball affect occurs, self-esteem turns into depression, turns into temper problems and the list goes on. At a burn camp participants are surrounded by other burn survivors like themselves, and judgement isn't an issue. I would try one and see if this works.

Both of you need treatment for trauma. And Star of Bethlehem will help both of you. It is a Bach Flower Essence and is available at most health food stores or online. And Rescue Remedy (in addition to Star of Bethlehem) for your daughter.

Reiki is being sent to both of you for your speedy recovery. You can ask for and receive Reiki freely by joining Reiki_Path@yahoogroups.com

With best wishes,
