What a great question! I coach basketball and I can see your dilemma. My first advice is to talk to the coach and find out what he thinks you can do to make his team. That will make the coach aware of you and help you begin an important habit of getting help on improving.

Team basketball is so much different than looking at the game part by part. If you become a student of the game, you will notice that certain components are more important for making a good team. John Wooden, one of the winningst coaches, once made a list of what is important in choosing a good team player: Here is that list:

1-Quickness and speed.
2- Size and jumping ability.
3- Co-ordination and balance.
4- Experience.
5-Fight, determination, courage, desire.
6-Ball-handling and shooting ability.
7- Industriousness..
8-Enthusiasm.
9-Co-operation and team attitude.
10-Self control.
11-Alertness.
12-Remaining years of eligibility.

Each coach has his own list, whether they realize it or not. It would be in your best interest to get to know the coach and vice versa. At your height, I would recommend lots of ballhandling work, , you may or may not grow depending upon your genes, and those skills would help at any position. Remember that for basketball you must be quick and in great physical condition for next year's tryouts. Always keep in mind what your position does and whether or not you can do those things. Ask your parents to help you attain your goal, they can be a great resource and support. Also, remember that being a good player doesn't always mean being a good scorer. A point guard really is an extension of the coach on the floor. You can be the same extension if you work at it as well. So if you hope to make your team, get to know the coach and his system and/or philosophy and make it your own. You also want to get involved in summer basketball, and most definitely the school's team camps. Coaches are usually obligated to take all who are interested, as it would be unfair to exclude. Also Individual camps are everywhere to help you improve your individual game. So get involved and always ask your coaches how you might improve and help the team. Whatever it is you decide to do, do it! Don't sit around and hope, get up and do something! Good luck!

First of all forget about the streetball answer you got.Work on your fundamentals ie. defense, rebounding, ball handling, shooting. One thing you can do is ask the coach what you need to work on to make the team,he may or may not remember you but give it a shot anyway. At least he will get to know you this way and see how sincere you are to make the team.I would really suggest getting a hold of a basketball video for some great tips.A player such as Steve Nash has a great video to teach the fundamentals of the game.If you cant afford the video ask the school coach what drills can help you to become a better player.Remember this is a team game and that streetball mentality just doesnt cut it in real basketball.

im a 5'6 freshman PG that starts on varsity! I know everything you should do bro!

1. DEDICATION is the only way you will suceed in basketball, its about getting up everyday shooting, dribbling, running, lifting.
2. have a basketball w/ you 90% of the day dribblin, passing at certain spots of a wall.
3. learn how to shoot over your head http://www.slamdunk.ru/images/c/chauncey-billups_300_050606.jpg
4. play pickup games as much as possible ive been playin pick up games since i was about 7 or 8 now instead of me begging to play i get asked to play!
5. at tryouts coaches almost ONLY notice how good you DEFENSE is and you HUSTLE, and a little on how AGGRESIVE you are, they dont want a pussy on the court.

6. people will tell you how bad you suck but just ignore them cause at the end you'll be the better man

7. good luck, what grade are you in?

This what I do. First if you want to play team basketball you have to learn street basketball. Play at a local park one on one against anybody. If you want to improve your dribbling do crossovers with your eyes closed. And in tryouts standout. Get the ball whenever you can and play D

it is nearer than maximum human beings might think of. The Dream group become usa's first expert athletes in the Olympics, so the different countries have been ill-arranged. Their legacy is wonderful, however the athleticism of in the present day can in basic terms approximately experience the 1992 group. So i might nonetheless say the Dream group is suited, however the Redeem group and 1996 Dream group have been close.

Practice your ball-handling and your shooting. At 5'6", those two skills are going to be your ticket to make the team. If you can't handle the ball well at your size, you stand no chance of making the team.
