make it simple first, take:
X= x^(1/2)
Y= y^(1/2)
now you have:
X+Y^2=5
X^2+Y=3
put in the 1st equation the value of Y from the 2nd equation
=>
X^4 - 6X^2 + X +4=0
=> X=1
X=1 and Y=2
=>x=1 and y=4
