Im tired of people thinking that redneck and southern is the same thing it isnt. Southern is laid back and in many ways more genteel than the North. Southerners are taught to have proper manners, and be hospitable. Also, we speak slower and not through our noses like some do in the North. Rednecks are just a class of people. But when I tell people Im from Virginia, they start making "redneck" jokes. Why?

because most yankees only have ties in this country of about 50-100 years and it makes them feel superior to make jokes about southerners to hide the fact that their ancestors probably jumped off tomato boats in New York harbor in the early 1900's. If you ever want to see real rednecks go to western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, or Michigan. That doesn't mean that everyone there is, but there are alot.

As a trucker, I delivered and picked up many loads from up north and was always put down and many times scorned. They often times were amazed that I was wearing shoes. Some thinks that they are superior because they won the war, which they didn't really. The confederates thought they were fighting for women and found out they were fighting over Blacks, So they just quit and went home.

I don`t know why they would laugh, but none of you seem to really know what a redneck is, They did in fact originate in the south, thats where cotton is grown, correct? well, rednecks were poor whites that worked beside the blacks picking cotton, the term came from the blacks, they refered to this redneck, or that redneck, and the reason they were called this is because working in the fields all day, looking down to pick cotton allowed the sun to sunburn their neck, hence the term, redneck, blacks skin color tends to keep their skin from turning red when sunburned, but not whites.

because most of the media representations of "rednecks" are also southerners.
it isn't fair, especially since I know plenty of northern rednecks

I am from the south and I don't understand this, but anyway if they want to make fun of us then ok. We know that we are better than the jokes anyway.
