Laptops do not use lightbulbs for anything. Even CRT screens do not use lightbulbs. You should check your sources of information. On your laptop, there should be a function button (usually labeled FN). Press and hold this down. The writing on this button is also usually blue). Find a key on your keyboard with blue writing which has what looks like a small sun (circle with lines emanating from it). It will be pointing up or down. Press the key that is pointing up until you get to the brightness that you want.

Light bulb? - very funny, I'll have to remember that one

Check your monitor color set up
Start menu select Control Panel, double click Display, on the Settings tab (far right) click the Advanced button. On this dialog box look for a tab that shows the Gamma, Brightness, Contrast (Color tab on my computer) click on Defaults button that should help. From there adjust Gamma, Brightness, Contrast

Hope that gets you started in the right direction

If you can see the image but it is dark, then it is definitely the backlight.

If there was something wrong with the screen, you would either get a garbled image, or you would not see anything at all.
