My second child was born three weeks ago. I was planning on waiting until my contractions were very regular and I couldn't stand the pain anymore, because that's how long I had to wait to be admitted with my first child (a 37 hour labor and was only 2 1/2 cm dilated after 24 hours). With my second, I'd been having some irregular contractions and I knew it was coming, but NEVER would have thought to go to the hospital except that I had a very faint trickle of fluid and I thought my water may be leaking. Thank goodness for it because my son was born less than 3 hours after arriving at the hospital, and my contractions never got regular, or even painful, with this one. Without that trickle, I would've stayed at home and that's where this baby would have been born. I am so thankful for that trickle (which, by the way, was just a teeny leak in the water sac).

I went in for a routine doctor's appointment with no contractions or anything at 5pm and had my son by 7pm, with at most 30 minutes of real pushing and deep labor.
I didn't go into labor, though but was induced because of baby's heart rate was too high , but I did do it all natural.
If you had contractions 2 minutes apart for 8 hours, I'd say you were in early labor ALONE for 8 hours.
You have to be careful when that happens, because it could have been signs of something bad.
But I'm glad you're happy and well !

I went in with my 2nd after laboring at home for a few hours. Once the contractions reached 5 minutes apart, I went in. It was 6 hours from beginning to end. (I woke up at 2 AM with contractions 10 mins apart and had her at 8 AM)

I ate mexican food for supper and was having contractions every 5 minutes or so... got admitted to the hospital, thinking it was the real deal. I was 4 days overdue, so as long as I was there, they broke my water and induced labor. My son was born 1:40 minutes later. It would have been about 30 minutes less, but I was in transition and didn't know it... asked for pain medication, thinking I was still in the very early stages. Of course, it slowed things way down, so we had to wait another half hour to see the little darling.

my first labor was 12hrs total, I went to the hospital when I started screaming louder-baby was OP so my contractions weren't really measureable (they were irregular)
My second labor was just under 4hrs total, it was a homebirth, but I wouldn't have known when to leave for the hospital, it was so fast I didn't accept that I was in labor until it was time to push!
5 min apart is probably still a good guideline, couple that w/ increasing intensity and decreasing presence of mind. If you go to early, you can always leave and come back later
