If you can't find some real agar, you can make fairly decent fake agar by adding beef bullion to plain gelatin in hot water and then letting it set, for full details see the link below.
Personally I would also add a little sugar and vegemite or similar, but not too much.

Agar is actually also a common Asian dessert.
You can buy Agar (sometimes called Agar Agar) in most Asian grocery stores. It's a dried translucent- white, celluphane type seaweed.
Soak some agar in water and wash before use. Then boil some water and put in agar to dissolve. (Proportions usually are on the packet, but you can experiment). Stir the pot continuously as it tends to stick to bottom. Once it's all melted (clear liquid, slightly more viscous than water), simply scoop into the petri dish, let it cool and set. Do not fridge before it sets or else you'll get ice.
If you're after the dessert version (many variations...this is just one of them), put 20g agar in about 6 cups (estimate) of water. Again stir till dissolved. Then add 1 can condensed milk and a couple of drops of vanilla essence (or other essence that you prefer). Stir till boil, scoop into small bowls, let it cool, set then fridge for a nice summer treat.
Alternative, once set, chill, cut into little cubes and serve with canned fruits.

Agar is made from a type of seaweed, so you'd have to be able to get that first. See this website for details: http://www.sciencebuddies.org/mentoring/project_ideas/MicroBio_Agar.shtml
The website provides the names of some suppliers. You'll get directions on the package on how to make it. If you need it to be sterile (if you're going to try to grow bacteria on it), and you don't have access to an autoclave, you can use a pressure cooker to sterilize the plates and make the agar. Use a container about twice as big as the volume you need cause it tends to boil over.
