If I am just meeting them I will shake their hand
If it is someone that I know I will probably hug them it depends though on how well I know them, if I don't know them all that well I just say hi and wave, when I was a teen in highschool girls hugged everyone that they knew and liked, and sometimes boys would hug each other but mostly they said what's up and and did some type of hand shake I guess

It all depends....family and close friends will usually hug. Guy friends may greet each other with a special hand shake, high five, or pat on the upper arm. Some female teenagers will hug their female friends, others may smile and say a greeting, same goes with guys. When meeting a stranger, a handshake is usually a good choice. Americans like to keep their personal space, and won't usually kiss unless it is with their girlfriend/boyfriend or husband or wife.

Teenagers generally just say "hi", although girls in certain places will hug each other if they're friends. And sometimes a girl may even hug a male friend. (Guys won't hug each other, though!) And, of course, couples will kiss each other as a greeting.
An adult may shake a teenager's hand, but the teenager won't generally initiate it.

Shaking hands is very unsanitary. I don't shake hands. You're risking germs and bacteria when you do that. How do you know that person didn't just pick their nose or scratch something in their nether regions. How do you know that they didn't just use the bathroom and didn't wash their hands. How do you know that they didn't just blow their nose without a tissue. What if they just changed a baby's soiled diaper. What if they just petted their dog or picked their scoopings off of the ground. If anything I'll greet someone without physical contact whatsoever.

it really depends on the individual. different people do different things depending on how well they know the person. saying hi or waving most common, but honestly their is no real "american" culture or "american" way of greeting people. I'm sure it's the same way with where ever you're from.

Teenageers will often touch their closed fists together and say "yo" or something similar.
Most people usually wave, or just say "hi", or "how's it goin'?", or "how are you?".
Adults shake hands.
