Importance is a relative term that is characterized by one's perception and comparisons. However, small things in large amounts can make a difference. Look at the Brazilian fire ants and what they destroy during their migrations. Also, phytoplankton are tiny organisms that when they become too abundant in lakes can drown out light, deplete oxygen, and kill thousands of fish.

I suppose the first question that must be asked is, Are we important? I assume that your answer is yes.

The second question then is "Who says we are important?" Well, it seems to me that we do.

Perhaps there are alien life forms in other parts of the universe who do not think we are important. But that does not matter right now, because we have not yet encountered them, if they exist. If they don't exist, then it obviously doesn't matter anyway!

I don't know why the universe is the size that it is. Perhaps if it was smaller then we may not have evolved. But the point is that the only reason we are important is because we say so. This implies that we have the consciousness to recognize what being "important" means and the ability to decide what is important. Of course, we are very biased: if you ask a fundamentalist religious person which religion is most important, that person will say their own, simply because it's most important to them. We are important to ourselves (admit it: we are a narcissistic society), but if we're not important, then who is?

I'm not entirely sure that I'm making sense. I hope I am. :-P

Ahhh, yes. But we are tremendously large when compared to many things at the sub atomic scale.

In the end, we see up the scale toward the cosmic and down the scale toward the microcosmic. Depending on the perspective, we are both unimaginably large and unimaginably tiny. And if it's important at all, we can think about it.
