For some reason we have to turn our thermostat all the up on 80 just to have the heat pop on in our house and for any hot air to come out of the vents. It is like 30 degrees outside so it should be able to pop on at a lower temp. Something has got to be wrong but we aren't sure where to start. Could it be the thermostat that is broken or the heating unit itself.

The thermostat needs to be calibrated, put a good thermometer next to it and check the temp, easy to change just match up the wires one at a time.

Is there a large hole in the wall behind the thermostat where the wires come through? If so cold air will come down the wall and influence the thermostat.Turn off the power to the furnace and remove the 2 screws that secure the stat to the wall and seal up the hole.Reinstall the stat to the wall and make sure it is level.Use a level.

Your thermostat may not be level.

It may be in an area that stays warmer.

It may be broken.

You can spend a lot of money on a new thermostat but the cheap ones will do the job.

But it may be easier to just get a new one like the one you have.

Try calibrating the Mercury switch on the thermostat, it seems like it could be bent. If your unit is not switching on at the temp. specified on the thermostat, it is bent. Calibrate by bending it back to where it belongs. Check temp. of room and bend position of mercury switch to correct angle.

if the system is functioning properly(that is the furnace is running properly when it does run) then I would have to say that it is a thermostat problem. I have heard good things about the newer digital ones. it shouldnt be too hard to install either.

I HAVE THAT PROBLEM TO SO WHAT I DID IS TO HAVE SOMEONE TO CHECK AROUND MY WINDOWS TO FOUND ANY DRAFTS. AND THEN FILL THEM END. ANOTHER THING I HAVE ADDED SPACE HEATERS WITH A THERMOSTAT NEAR THE PROBLEM AREA. NOW I DO NOT HAVE THE PROBLEM I PLACED ON A TIMER SO IT COMES ON ONLY AT NIGHT. THIS IS WHEN U REALLY NEED THE EXTRA HEAT. WEAR MORE CLOTHING DURING THE DAY.
