I have been dancing for as long as I can remember, and ballet is my life. I agree that ballet never gets the credit or recognition it deserves as an athletic art form, and is most often seen as a few girls twirling around stage in tulle rather than a form of expression that involves athleticism, grace, stamina, dedication, and intelligence...something that not many other activities require all of. Ballet unfortunately tends to come with the stereotypes of being simply girly, something people only do when they are three years old, and associated with eating disorders...all of which I am proud to say are not true. i love ballet =)

Remember this thought. It is normally not a good idea to deal in absolutes. Your question for example. More often then not if you use an absolute you may be proven wrong. Some folks would even go out of their way to prove you incorrect.
Now to your question. I normally would not go to a ballet. That's just me. I would like to but my family is a bit lethargic when it comes to being spontaneous or adventurist most of the time. This is actually funny because I was just Chanel surfing and came across a coach getting a ballerina ready for a big show. It was awkward and sweety. I can deal with that because I know it is a very competitive situation and extremely demanding both mentally and physically. I could not do it. But I admire someone who is that dedicated to work that hard and the end result is a "Beyond Beautiful" "Beyond Description" show that is no less impressive then a great oil painting masterpiece from a hundred years ago.
But still I get the impression that the setting is for a more refined and slightly more elite audience. I had both my girls in dance and ballet. Once they could tell us what they liked and did not like we listened. My older daughter went on to be very good in soccer. My younger daughter is very good at being an organizer and manager of sorts. It started when she was promoted quickly in her school safety patrol organization. Now she is into experimenting and inventing and driving me nuts using my tools and drawing equipment. But ya know! We support them no matter what.
So you guys and gals that can stay with the riggers of ballet...MY HATS OFF TO YOU.....

ballet is awesome.
It has helped me tremendously in learning other dances and with my posture.
Ballet is tougher than any sports that deals with physical strength /stamina, only below football.
Some people don't like ballet because in reality the ballet world has specific requirements (i.e body type, weight, physical look, height etc.). But in some companies they are more lenient.
For those who don't wish to pursue ballet as a career (like me), ballet provides a classroom where one can become strong, disciplined, and above all having confidence.
And if you take ballet and male, consider yourself lucky because chances are classroom ratio of female to male is 30:3.
I am still trying to master a perfect grand jete (if ever).=)

Many, many people like ballet. I'm a former ballet dancer, and I can say for sure that there are even many people whose lives completely center around it, either as performers or as spectators.

i LOVE ballet! haha i think some people think there's too much time and work involved....and if they get to the level of pointe work, then ballet becomes painful....and sometimes people are made to do it by their parents and that always sucks...

I think it's a matter of masculinity for men in general and women may find it in their minds to repel men, but that's not always the case...and in my opinion, I believe many people like ballet but they chose not to admit it to their peers and friends. That's the problem with our world...a lot of us can't speak openly without being criticized.

No one likes Ballet in the US for the same reason no one likes soccer...Boring! Actually ballet is more exciting than soccer, at least there isn't a scoreless tie in ballet.
