There is a greyhound station in downtown Sacramento (right by the Downtown Plaza)...the main greyhound station in SF is near where the bay bridge meets the bay (in the financial district). Tickets are pretty cheap...I would say that this is your best option.

Take Amtrak, but DON'T go to the Coliseum station. You'll be backtracking. Get off at the Richmond station which much sooner than the Coliseum station. When you exit the Richmond station you are in the Bart station. Take Bart to SF.
You can also get off at Emeryville and take a bus to SF.
The Amtrak station in Sacramento is near Old Sacramento.

i do this trip every july. i take the amtrak to emeryville where they have a connector bus for no additional charge to san francisco. it is a short ride and they set the times so you don't have to wait for the bus.its waiting for you. if the train is late the bus waits til it gets there. there are several stops the bus will make so you can get off at any one of them. it is a 3 hour ride and it is nice. there is a dining car with food and beverages have a cocktail or two. it is so much better than greyhound and less expensive. i believe i paid 19 dollars last time.

amtrak or greyhound bus are your best bet.
Amtrak you can take the capital corridor train from Sacramento to Oakland, Coliseum stations, walk up and over the train tracks to the BART station at Oakland Coliseum then take bart to SF. From there you can get off wherever you want in SF and take local transportation.

Capitol Corridor Amtrak is a good option. Greyhound is another alternative.
