The "S" and "S4" on a 928 mean little. They basically distinguish model years and a few more optional equipement. The 928 eventually ended up as a 928 GTS but was more or less the same car as the S4 with a few changes here and there as most car manufacturers do throughout the production life of a model. The 928 was never available in 4wd. The 928 is a very solid, well handling car that is perfectly reliable (typical of good Porsche engineering). Although being a Porsche, expect the repair bills to be high! I personally prefer the manual trans cars, but the cost of replacing a clutch on one is absolutley ridiculous. The automatic cars a definately more plentiful and easier to find a nice example of. Either way they are lots of fun to drive and the V8 sounds great too!

The answer is: not really. they werent the most reliable of porsches, nor the fastest on the track, but they are brutally awesome and totally worth the high repair bills. The S and S4 are just different years of the car. the S4 has a slightly different engine and quite a bit more power. They arent a toyota, but at the same time, theyre much more solid than the ferraris of that era. Remember: its a 20 year old car, and will need to be maintained like one.
sucks so few are manuals too. theyre very rare, and clutch jobs are like 2500 bucks. Outrageous.

you wont find cheap ones for a 928 S4. theyre just too rare, and the motor was only used on that car. Very lucky i may say though, because 928s are beyond sweet.

reliability is a relative term. The car boasts superior design, and construction, but parts are becoming harder to find, as well as reasonably priced service. Remember, when servicing the engine: The car was built around the engine. The S series Porsches boast a "special" handling package, s is for suspension. it is not a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

I owned one in those days, an 928 S. Only don't consider the manual shift, the multi clutch plates don't last long, the automatic is the way to go. Parts are pricey though. Reliability on the one that i had was great. It eats rear Tyre's, mine only lasted about 12,000km

I owned a 1987 porsche 928s4 and the brake lines allways went out on me and the car got into an accident then repaired and sold it for 20,000 in 1999. the difference between the s and s4 is that thhe s in not supercharged and the s4 is supercharged and it also has a turbo in it.
