Yes, you do have to drink water b4 your ultrasound. I was instructed for water only and have not heard of another liquid being requested or allowed by the Dr. making out the requisition. However, you will get instructions with your requisition, either on the back or a separate piece of paper. If you still do not have the information that you want, ask your Dr., or his receptionist what his preferance is. Also, to give you the heads up, besides water being the liquid of choice, a full 40 ounces will need to be in your system a full hour before your ultrasound. I started drinking 2.5 hrs befroe the appt., knowing that the last few ounces would be the toughest. I am glad I did! Just so you arent feeling too overwhelmed, I had to take 3 busses across a city during my last hour b4 the ultrasound! Odds are your last hour wont be so...bumpy, be happy, and remember, enjoy the end result!

Ask the doctor. I've had several ultrasounds done over time for medical conditions and they say they want you to have a full bladder (I've never been told it had to be water). But I am now pregnant and had two done over the last few months (when I was 10 weeks far and 24 weeks) and they've changed so much in the last couple years that they can clearly see the baby without having a full bladder (even on empty).

Yes you need to drink at least 2 full glasses of some kind of fluid. That's because in the early stages of pregnancy when your bladder is full it helps show the embryo and give more detail. After the 28th week you won't need to drink anything the baby will be big enough to be seen

this was a requirement in the past and may still be needed if the U/S equipment isnt the most modern, but most places these days do not need you to drink water. Its thought that drinking fluids makes the image clearer for the U/S.

Congratulations

They prefer water. Allow me to offer a bit of advice: Guzzle it within 20 minutes of your appointment. For my first u/s visit, I had more than 64 ounces of water, starting 2 hrs before my appt. I had to pee so bad by the time I got to the doctor's office that I was in tears. I will never make that mistake again! LOL

They say the sugar in OJ will get the baby kicking and you might have a better chance of seeing the sex.

Usually just plain water because it goes through your system faster so you get a full bladder when you go in to the doctor.

most lab techs or docs want your bladder to be full b-4 the u/s so as long as you drink something it dosent really matter but when the bladder is full they can get a clearer pic of your baby however some docs dont careand dont tell you to drink anything or do anything different then usual as long as you do strean yourself

The best thing to do is ask your doctor or call your hospital before you have your ultrasound.

I know you have to take something in order to get your baby moving, especially to tell the gender.
