Public schools are alotted a certain amount of money per year, which doesn't cover the costs of field trips, prom, special events, graduation, etc. That's what the fundraisers are for. Same thing with private schools, the money they make from tuition and other sources is used for academics and things that are needed rather than just wanted.

I can only speak to the situation at my school but we do not have extra money for things like field trips--materials for art and science projects--new computers and software licenses--things like that. The PTA does fundraisers to raise money for those things. A few years ago we did several fundraisers to raise money for a new playground--because the state said our playground was out of date.

Fundraisers are necessary if there isn't extra money in a school's budget for "extras". Several years ago our district had to cut our general budget in half during the middle of the year (because the state cut funding) so we had to use fundraising money to purchase things like paper towels and toilet paper--since we couldn't afford to buy more through the school budget.

when schools need money to be able to afford an event, for example, prom or spirit week, a school needs to get the extra funds from somewhere. this is where fundraisers come in handy, because it gets the kids involved in supporting their school.
