definitely go with the Apple macbook, give it a chance i recently bought one and its the best thing ive ever done... even if your a pc person the difference is amazing, mac is much simplier, No viruses, and perfect performance! if your worried about compatibility its really not an issue any more. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=A4791B5D&nclm=MacBook

You're funny..."general purpose" laptop for watching videos, browsing the web, playing music,email,multi-tasking etc..
Sounds pretty specific to me...
$1300 will buy you a lot of laptop. I just got an HP dv9000z a while back, which is $949 for the basic unit. Customized, ended up right at $1300.
The 17" widescreen display is great plus I have a full size keyboard (with a number pad). It has everything one can want. My ONLY two complaints are that...
1/ it does not have a standard PCMCIA card slot and uses the new better faster (but not compatible) ExpressCard/54 instead making all my old PC cards (including wireless internet) obsolete.
2/ The speaker port is in the front of the laptop. I use it a lot on a desk, and I have the speaker cable in the way.
Other than that, I would give up my right leg before I gave it up. I'm an IT consultant, and have multiple business class applications and system utilities loaded. It NEVER slows down.
Highly recommended.

13" MacBook. It can run MacOS and Windows, so you sort of get two laptops in one. Plus, it's built really well, with no fans or vents on the bottom, so you won't go into meltdown using it on the bed. It's also pretty fashionable and makes a statement. Just don't get the black one, you can configure the white one to the same specs for about $100 less for some reason.
