you will probly see steam coming out of engine compartment when your car overheats. if this happens, pull over and turn off engine. let it cool off a bit, then see if there is a coolant leak and if you are low on coolant. if all appears ok, start it up after a little while and go home.

When your engine is at normal operating temperature, the needle on the coolant temperature gauge is typicallly in the middle. If it rises into the red area, you're having a problem with overheating. Sometimes you might see the needle suddenly drop. This happens in situations when you have blown headgasket, and the engine is loosing coolant into the cylinders. When there is a sudden coolant loss, the coolant temperature sending unit may not have any coolant in contact with it, and may falsely report the engine as being much cooler (when if fact it may be dangerously overheating). Overheating often is caused by failure of the thermostat. If you notice the engine getting too hot, pull over and let it cool off. If you ignore an overheating engine, it will eventually stall, and may even suffer permanent damage. Some types of thermostats (known as "fail-safe" thermostats) fail in the open position, as a result, the engine will never be able to warm up. This can harm your fuel economy and also cause long term engine damage if not addressed. The idea behind fail-safe thermostats is that you have some time to get to a garage to get it fixed, and don't have to worry about it overheating (but the symptoms are much more subtle, and many people ignore them entirely)

what to do when it overheats depends on why it is overheating. the car should have a light (what is commonly referred to as a dummy light) or a guage for the temperature of the water in the engine. a light is not a good idea for the reason that it only comes on when your car is alrady overheating. thats why it is called a dummy light. its too late dummy. now your probably stuck where you are. you gotta shut the car off or risk doing ALOT of damage to your engine. a guage will let you know how hot the water is and if starts to get too hot, you can look for somewhere to pull over and shut it down to let it cool off. the reason for the overheating could be as simple as needing a new radiator cap to needing a new head on the engine!

Your car shouldn't over heat with regular maintenance. Never ever let the water level in the radiator get low... Check this on a regular basis. Ask at your local mechanics any questions.. Always carry a couple of litres of water just in case.. Look after your car... check the oil level, water level and break fluid etc regularly and it will save you alot of money. .....If your car does over heat, let the car cool down properly before undoing the radiator cap or you may suffer severe burns to your hands, arms, chest and face.

Thermostat, most likely. if your hose is hot except at the radiator then that would be the place to start. the cooling systems are pretty simple on most cars. I change my fluid and thermostat once a year. If you have a good mechanic do your work they should replace the thermostat when they flush the coolant. most quick lube places do not. if the thermostat is not opening the water will not be able to get cool.

you should know by the temperature gauge, 220 degrees is the most you should run it at.
It will not just stop unless you turn it off and let it cool down.
an overheated engine will do some big time damage to the engine.
some causes are low antifreeze, bad or stuck thermostat, bad hose.

You live and die by your guages. Always keep an eye on your guages. It will tell you your water temperature. IF it over heats turn the air conditioner off and if it gets to the point of boiling over then you should pull over and let it cool off. Make sure the radiator if full before you drive it.IF it stops on you then you may have fried the engine.....Dave........

these days, you dont check the coolant when warm lol take the red lever cap and throw it away. ive found myself lifting it when the engine is running. well the release of pressure, allows the coolant to escape as well as boil quickly. it'll lose enough coolant that it'll just get hotter.
guages GUAGES AMEN and if your new, or have a driver who doesnt pay attention to them, go to an ag related auto parts store, ask for murphy guages. you'll love em sorta lol, beats having toast al-e-alumicast wedge

First of all you should keep anti-freeze (also works as a coolant cause it is harder to boil) in your car year round. 50/50 with water. Also you have a heat gage on your dash board, That will tell you if it is getting hot.

do you mean if your car overheats? because it shouldn't normally, if it does first thing is to turn on your heater, that will help disipate the extra heat, stop check coolant level, if low add, make sure your fan is actually on, beyond that your probably going to need to have it looked at based on what you have said.
