For the last 5 or 6 years a girl has been telling people in my small community of 65k people that I raped her - but I did no such thing. Well recently, I was been asked to leave a restaurant where she works, the server telling me explicitly that it was at the request of the person in question. I was there attending a meeting with an academic group I am involved in at university. So not only has there been personal insult among mutual friends and other peers, now this is starting to impact my "professional" life as a student. This is just the latest transgression of a whole history of malicious behavior on her part, towards me and also my sister.

As a student my funds are limited, but on the other hand, my life in my hometown has become almost unlivable. If I were to pursue a case of defamation of character/slander, what would be my risk of repercussion? Does having no money mean that I cannot live comfortably, free from these lies? What should I do?

that's a tough one... what you should do is get an order of protection against her, that way next time you do go some where she is, she will have to be the one to leave and it won't cost you a dime, she'll have to pay for it... and yes talk to a lawyer and find out what you can do...

Try getting blamed for arson and going through a seven hour polygraph..Passing with flying colors. But the police are so negligent they dont even give the people commited the arson on their own house a polygraph and let them get away with insurance fraud..Just because they were on the football team and they lived in a 300k house. The evidence was so obvious that a damn monkey could have solved it..Its been 4 years and nothing has been done. They told everyone I did it,including the news ..This happened the same night I got in a fight with the person. So of coarse they look directly to me.I am not a criminal or sociopath with no conscience. But it would have been easiest for them to blame me.....instead of the truth..The school even had a fundraiser for the person....So you try living in my town and try to get a good job...Especially since the cops didnt do a damn thing about their sociopathic ignorance and let them get away with it....I woulda been looking at 7 years...All because of people that have no conscience......But thats life ....I guess...So either move or just deal with it..suing wont do you any good...and the police probly believe her anyway...so just move out of town and dont look back...

If she has no proof and you have never been charged with a crime, I'd say you should talk to a lawyer and prosecute this. If it is found that she is guilty it will put an end to it, if on the other hand you are found guilty she will be validated. Any which way it turns out, it will be final.

You can take her to small claims court. It costs very little and you can win as much as $5000. However, you will need witnesses and proof that she has hurt you.
