Every girl is built differently--some people don't even have a "barrier" (it's called a hymen) and the rest have them in different shapes and sizes. Don't be afraid. Ask your mom, sister, or good friend to help you the first time, and if it hurts, then stop. If you really do have a hymen that's so thick you can't get a tampon in (this is really rare), get your doctor to refer you to a gynecologist. They can break it for you.

There is no barrier you have to break to use a tampon. Every woman has a hymen but it has a hole in it that the tampon goes through. You may not even have your hymen any more for that matter as they often get broken during sports. To use a tampon read the literature that comes with them and look at the diagram. They are inserted at an angle not straight up. Once you try them a couple of time you will wonder what all the fuss was all about. They do not hurt being inserted and once in you don't feel them if you did it right.

This sounds like a good question for an older sister, trusted adult female family member, your mother if you are comfortable asking any of them. The 'barrier' you are referencing is called a Hymen. That's really all I know about the topic due to a distinct gender difference. Hopefully you have someone at home to ask or there will be a credible answer from one of the female members of the Yahoo Answer community to assist you. Be careful soliciting health advice here as some people don't have a clue as to what they are talking about in some cases. Hope this helps in finding the right answer for you.

They make slim/junior size tampons for young girls, I would recommend you try those. Specificaly Tampax Satin Teens. It may stretch or even break your hymen, but it might not if you're careful. It really depends on what your hymen is like to begin with, some girls can even have sex and not break their hymen! Yes there have been cases of women having sex and getting pregnant and going to the hospital to give birth, and the doctor finds her hymen still there, so they have to remove it. lol, some hymens are really stretchy, but either way it's not really a big deal. Breaking it will make things a lot easier. More girls break their hymen from sports, bikes, tampons etc than they do from sex believe it or not, and in my opinion the increased comfort you get out of wearing tampons far outweighs any increased pleasure a man might get out of breaking your hymen. I say don't be scared and go for it, tampons are totaly worth it.

Its kind of like if your a virgin. A new feeling that you won't understand. Except this being small, soft and manually inserted.
The tampon will not hurt you, but it may be uncomfortable the first few times. You wont notice it after a while. They are more popular.
Why do i know these thing's... : O lol

the barrier that you may be thinking of is the 'hymen'. It is a membrane partially covering the inlet to the vaginal canal. Years ago, I would say that the majority of women when they were married has theirs intact, but today with more women becoming physically active, theirs usually tear and you do not know. Please see the link below for a few tips...
good luck

as far as how to use them.. just read the directions .... it probably comes with diagrams and everything... you do have to break through and on some women it is harder than others.. when you decide to try it.. make sure you try it at home because it's not going to hurt to much going in... but it's probably going to hurt you when you try and take it out for the first time...so make sure you are home because it's probably going to take you a while to get it out.. and it will hurt.. but once you get the hang of it and figure it out you will learn how to pull it out without it hurting, and you will get use to it.. but the first few times it's going to hurt and take probably take you a while to get it out- so just make sure you are at home when you are learning...
