As mom to 3 I washed all my new baby clothes in Dreft I believe it is. It's made for babies, gentle and will not irritate their skin at all. It's safer to make sure any dyes or other chemicals are gone before baby wears the clothes. Besides, makes them softer too.

There is a chemical in those clothes called sizing. You have to wash it before baby can wear it. Up until recently a lot of manufacturers were using a formaldehyde based sizing in clothes for stiffening. It can cause breathing problems, wash the clothes using a mild detergent and dry in your dryer. They should be fine for baby after that.

For both of my children, I washed the new clothes in Dreft.
My daughter had/has very sensitive skin. Dreft saved her from getting major rashes. She took a nap on my bed when she was an infant and I covered her up to her ear with my soft blanket (not remembering it wasn't washed in Dreft) she woke up with red all over the side of her face, that later turned into a huge blister. She is 8 years old now and still I wash her clothes before she wears them. Besides Dreft she has no problem with Arm & Hammer. Tide is the worst for us, we both itch like crazy from it.

YES, certainly do that. Clothes are all treated with various chemicals in the manufacturing process, few are laundered before being sold at the retail level. The excess dyes and other chemical agents could cause skin problems for your kid, wash in a gentle detergent and rinse well.

No. Not until it occurred to me that when I was waiting until the clothes fit, putting them on my baby THEN washing them after their first use that they would shrink and be too small to wear again.

If I think something is going to shrink, then I'll make sure to wash it first or just put it on when it's too big.

Definatly.. Not only the chemicals they spray on the cloths when they have been returned... But think of how many people have touched those cloths in the store who havent washed their hands all day. *ick*

♥♥ yup! with that special baby laundry soap (can't remember the name, sorry!) I didn't want to takae any chances with a newborn, but now, (he is 2) I dont, if i buy him new clothes I dont usually wash them first.♥♥

Yes you should wash them, it makes sure there's nothing bad on them, plus it gives them a chance to shrink, so they can wear them more then once, rather then not washing it, having them wear it, wash it, then it shrinks and is too small

Yes, mainly because you never know who or how many people have handled it before you buy it. Also because the manufaturers usually put certain chemicals and stuff on them which could be potentially harmful to a newborn's sensitive skin.
