I'd say it makes it easy to tell which side is which from a distance as well as reasons given by other answerers.

Cheap earphones generally have bad build quality and sound quality. $1 earphones aren't expected to last you that long and you should consider them "trash" or even disposable if you decide to buy them over and over again whenever they break. I would recommend buying some nice $50 Skullcandy headphones that will usually last you a while and come with a carry case. If you're looking to get ultra durability, I've heard that the JVC XtremeXplosives offer impressive sound quality and ultra durability for only $30 on Amazon. Really, it all depends on your budget. However, if you want your earphones to last get ones made out of metal (Monster Jamz, urBeats) and have carry cases included. TL;DR Don't ever buy $1 earphones. They will sound horrible, look horrible, and have terrible build quality. Spend at least $30 for a decent, long lasting pair.

I have no idea, but I've worked around that odd fact. I put mine around my neck and the right (on mine) is shorter and closer to my ear. It works, but I wish they would just make them the same length. Some of the brands do but not the one I own. Let me know if you can find any!
