This is Charge and theses are called so b'coz when a beam of proton passes through an electric or magnetic fld it diverse from its original path and bends towards the -ve plate this is why they(Scientists) thought it is of =ve charge and just reverse is the case of electrons.
Hope this answer will satisfy u.

In physics, the proton (Greek πρῶτον proton = first) is a subatomic particle with an electric charge of one positive fundamental unit (1.602 × 10−19 coulomb), a diameter of about 1.5×10−15 m, and a mass of 938.3 MeV/c2 (1.6726 × 10−27 kg), 1.007 276 466 88(13) amu or about 1836 times the mass of an electron.

The electron is a fundamental subatomic particle that carries a negative electric charge. It is a spin-½ lepton that participates in electromagnetic interactions, and its mass is less than one thousandth of that of the smallest atom. Its electric charge is defined by convention to be negative, with a value of −1 in atomic units.

Spin 1/2: In quantum mechanics, spin is an intrinsic property of all elementary particles. Fermions, the particles that constitute ordinary matter, have half-integer spin. Spin-½ particles constitute an important subset of such fermions. All known elementary particles that are fermions have spin ½.

within an atomic nucleus there are two subatomic particles one is the neutron and the other proton, neutron possesing no charge, while proton possesing a positive charge the nucleus is sorrounded by the electrons moving in a fixed orbit, electrons possess the negative charge

it is the charge ofcourse
by convention we say a proton is positively charged and electron is negatively charged and both attract each other
