The states doesn't really need to do that. One of the previous posters' is right, annexing/taking over Mexico would just create major problems for the economy and the dollar would most likely drastically fall. The U.S. exercises enough influence in both countries; furthermore, neither is or can anytime soon become a viable threat, military or economically-wise. Really, U.S. doesn't have much interest in either - Canada is wholly dependent economically (I think 80% of trade is with U.S.) on the states, while Mexico's economy and unstable situation, driven in large part by the drug trade, would just create further problems.
I am not exactly sure what you mean by "taking over." By if we were to consider the extreme scenario of blatant annexation, look back 20-30 years. Today, the ground zero of terrorism is the middle east, but back then there was a large number of "white" militant organizations (white in terms of hereditary nationals, not just immigrant citizens): the FLQ, Baader-Meinhof Gang, Deutche RAF and so on. If annexation was to take place, these would spring up all over the place, especially in Mexico which still faces a noticeable guerrilla problem.
Plus, most experts predict that after Bush, the next president will be elected on a strong anti-war, less intervention platform. This not only means not invading sovereign countries, but rather a policy of less meddling in foreign affairs.

Canada and Mexico should be invaded anyway. These socialist country's just bring the continent down. We are wasting our time in Iraq and the middle east protecting our interests. Canada could provide all the oil needed and many other natural resources. Mexico is also rich in resources and resort property. Canadians and Mexicans would be better off.

No matter what the plan would be, I'm sure it would drag down our economy and prestige. I like our country just the way it is... an independent, stand alone nation...with allies. I don't know if anyone has noticed...Canada has help during the crisis with 9/11 and the war, but Mexico hasn't done SH__! Who wants them as part of this nation. NOT ME...thanks, but no thanks.
