Use the bathtub. Put a harness on your cat to hold him/her. Keep talking to your pet. Don't spray too hard/fast, and keep the water slightly warm. Some cat don't put up a fight, because they know you are trying to help. Rinse well. Pat, pat, pat, dry. Don't rub.
Then, try to determine why he/she is getting smelly. You may need to see the VET anyway.

I have only ever tried to give "CASSANDRA" a bath once. It was not an experience either of us wish to repeat again in the foreseeable future. I'm thinking "Washing Machine", and the words, "Gentle Cycle", "Sud Saver" and "Drip Dry" just keep springing to mind.
If I had been a smart person I would have posted a question in the "Cats" section of "Pets" on Answers. Perhaps then I would not have lost so much blood.

Put it into the bath tub and use some good smelling shampoo or body wash on him. Pepeat more then once if you have to. I give my cat a bath that way. I just use shampoo.

okay well first you fill up the tub and then throw the cat in....nope im kidding.
well, good luck. i have four cats and ive never successfully bathed them. they're declawed but they always end up causing me physical pain in some sort of way.
you might be able to wet a rag and rub it onto the cat's fur. or you can buy this brush that bathes your cat by just rubbing over the fur. its cool and it lessens the chance of you getting scratched or bitten.
good luck with the cat cleaning

Put some shampoo into a very clean toilet, put the cat in, flush the toilet several times.... Then run as it gets out and attempts to claw you to death.
