I have had my silver dollar for 7 years, recently it has been eating my other fish. I thought they were herbivores, but I have witnessed him swallowing smaller fish whole and chewing on other larger fish. Is there something wrong with it? Or is this normal?

It is very normal for a large silver dollar who has been in the tank for 7 years to eat or kill other,newer,smaller fish.If it fits in the mouth,it will be eaten or bitten. The silver dollar is a semi aggressive fish. It is related to the pacu and pirahnna. Yes,they eat plants but an intruding fish will be attacked.

Silver dollars are primarily herbivores but they will take food where ever they can get it including smaller fishes as you are finding out. It's not unusual at all and nothing wrong with him, it's just what most fish do. Rule of thumb, never trust any fish with anther fish that will fit in it's mouth.

I don't know why this happens, but several years ago, my silver dollar ate or killed every fish in the tank. I ended up just keeping him as a single fish. Incidentally, he also used to jump out of his tank almost daily. I always rescued him in time.
