Every honey bottle I've ever seen has warned against giving any to babies under a year old. Anyone know why?

It's true that honey should not be fed to infants younger than 1 year old. Clostridium bacteria that cause infant botulism usually thrive in soil and dust. However, they can also contaminate certain foods — honey in particular. Infant botulism can cause muscle weakness, with signs like poor sucking, a weak cry, constipation, and an overall decreased muscle tone (floppiness).

Parents can reduce the risk of infant botulism by not introducing honey into their baby's diet until after the first birthday. As kids get older, their bodies are better able to handle the bacteria.

Firstly, honey is extremely thick and syrupy, and Babies are more used to liquids like breastmilk and formulas, so sh\/he won't know how to handle it in his/her mouth. So it can impose a choking hazard.
Secondly, infants can't properly digest honey again because of what their body is used to --basically, a liquid diet.
Also, sometimes honey can contain a certain type of bacteria that, when in Baby's intestines, can't grow so just sits and sort of goes bad.
And this is the same bacteria that causes botulism, a deadly bacteria that is nearly instantaneously fatal for any age.
Botulism is what causes some canned foods to swell.
You should never eat ANY food out of swelled-up cans, by the way !!!

Honey can harbor spores of Clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism. An adult's intestinal tract is able to prevent the growth of these spores, but in a baby the spores can grow and produce life-threatening toxins.

honey has the potential of having botulism spores. While children over 1 year can deal with it, children under 1 do not have a strong enough immune system to fight off the botulism infection...so just wait tillthey are over one...not worth the risk.

The spores of the Clostridium botulinum bacteria can be found in honey, and when ingested by an infant, the spores can release a toxin that causes botulism.
