The fish has constipation and is having stress trying to move its bowel. Add some daphnia food, and don't overfeed. If that doesn't help, get some medicated food. It could also be a parasite in its stomach or intestines. Don't spend too much trying to cure it. These things happen and could have started before you bought the fish.

There are a few things that are possible.

As the others have said, brownish in color and long trailing tubular material is most likely fecal material. If it is a mostly white and almost clear and trailing, it could be the initial signs of an intestinal infection. It could also be a parasite. Can you post a pic of it somewhere? Then give us the URL so we can see it too.

Good luck.

It is most definitely poop. This means he's kinda constipated. you need ot take two frozen peas, microwave them for a few seconds in water, peel the shells off, and give them to him. Peas help constipation in fish. Don't forget the shells because small goldfish have trouble getting to the pea through the shell. And you can also mush the pea halves lightly, to make it even easier to eat. This is safe for your fish, but it's not nutritious besides fiber so only do it til the constipation is gone.

well unlike all of the OTHER answer it is NOT POOP
your fish have been infected with radioactivity.
like humans when ever the body receives radioactivity he or she will, in a matter of time, WILL puke or poop out their intestines.

so if your goldfish is pooping out things that are red or pink and NOT brown then yes... your fish have gotten radioactivity

if i were you i'd get gloves and throw out your fish and VERY CAREFULLY dump out the water from your fish tank. and most important of all take a long hot shower to wash out the radioactivity..
~hopes this helps =D

Its most likley poop or the casing on the poop. Somtimes fish will have parasites and that will cause the akward stuff coming out. I highly recommend not buying your fish from walmart as they dont know what they are talking about. Try a LFS( local fish store) because they tend to have more knowledge

Sometimes the fecal matter just hangs there. I had several gold fish in my time. But I am not an expert.

He's pooping. Not to worry. He's just a little on the constipated side. It'll pass.
