I had my son December 5th and just started my first period five days ago, and it was, like you said, heavy.
I talked to my ob/gyn and it's completely normal, even if you were like me--irregular, light periods that only lasted 2-3 days or heavy 9-day periods.
It has to do with high levels of hormones and all of that "Fun Stuff" .
I guess our body is just trying to play catch-up !
p.s. I breast feed and this happens, regardless or not if you're breastfeeding or not. The stuff about no periods and no need for birth control while breastfeeding is pure B.S.

My mom said her period got really heavy after she had kids (and stayed that way). She only started wearing tampons after she had kids because it was so heavy (tampons plus pads) and she had to be on her feet for 8 hrs a day. So yes, I'd say it's normal.
(Hope that doesn't depress you....)
Note after your edit: She said it was heavier than it was when she was my age, BUT I don't know if it was really heavy after childbirth and then lightened up or what.... It seems to be heavy for just a few days though, like most periods, but just heavier in general than the ones she got before childbirth.)

honey, that's normal. the first couple of periods you have after your check up will be heavy and then it will start to get back to normal. i did the same thing and i panicked and went to the dr. and everything was fine. if it will ease your mind call your dr. he will help. good luck. oh and by the way don't pay any attention about the breast feeding. it has nothing to do with your period.

Right after you have a baby you will bleed up to four weeks straight!! I'm fixing to go through it again myself in 10 weeks. Just watch your iron so you can keep your energy up!! You will bleed heavy for a while. It's very normal!

you also change to a different type of period after giving birth
see the Dr anyway

Your first period after pregnancy will be heavier and usually longer if you didn't breast feed your baby.
