practice , practice, practice take your time and go slow, it may take you a while to gain confidence and balance to do it well. it took me quite a while and lessons to get good.
GOOD LUCK!!!!

I'm not a skater but I used to be a sound technician for Disney on Ice show. I worked directly with the skaters during training, rehersals, and shows and I was able to analyze their performances every night. My youngest sister is also a skater.

The first thing you'll need to do is break your skates in (takes a while) then after that it's practice practice practice. It'll be a lot easier once you'll get your balance. I think to stop skating you'll turn your legs and feet and lean back slightly. You'll soon learn to stop on a dime. I've seen skaters drag their heel to slow down too.

Hey don't take my word for it cause I don't want you to bust your *ss and hurt yourself. Get a trainer if you can afford it. Working out will help your skating.

im a figure skater and first what you want to do is choose a foot. right or left, it doesnt matter. then you want to turn one of your feet in. lets say you choose your left foot, you would turn it towards the right. that should help you stop. if you have trouble with that, you can use your toe pick. to keep your balance, dont look at your feet. focus on something in front of you because when you look at your feet, you tend to fall easier. when you glide, do not push off your toe pick, try and push off from the side of your skate. you wont make a scratching sound and it will prevent you from catching your toe pick on the ice and falling. when you glide you want to bend alot into your knees and push off the ice hard with your edges. good luck!!!!

I haven't been skating in a while but I think there are some little teeth like things on the front of the blade. I believe that is what is used to stop. Hope that helps!
